Jane Phillips

The journey of Perle J. has been an evolutionally one. With Jane’s need to fuel her creative side and with an opportunity to live in Hong Kong, the inspiration for her collections began. She found creating jewellery came naturally.

From her Brisbane studio she creates beautiful, contemporary and eclectic pieces.

‘Jewellery should be thought of as wearable art and I design it as an open expression of myself.... a delicate balance between organic shapes and the rich colours of precious gemstones and timeless pearls.’

Jane has studied with the Goldsmith School since 2009, specializing in silversmithing. Her expertise is in pearls, holding a Graduate Pearl Diploma and Pearl Grading from GIA.

She joined the British Gemmological Association, completing a Diploma in Gemmology in 2012, and gained Fellowship of Gemmological Association (FGA) status.

She has used several silversmithing techniques including ‘forging’ in her bangles and bracelets. This is an ancient technique used to create curves, wedges or to spread the metal gracefully. It can transition from thick to thin. ‘Organic forms lend themselves to this technique,’ she says.

‘Sterling Silver,’ she insists, ‘is a wonderful material to work with - it’s malleable and can be formed and stretched in all directions.

This precious metal has fabulous reflective qualities and the direct hammering of the metal gives it an attractive textured surface.
